Ara giacinto

The Hyacinth macaw is the largest flying parrot species in the world — a deep cobalt-blue giant with a wingspan of up to 1.2 metres and one of the most powerful beaks in the parrot family. These are CITES Appendix I birds, which places them among the most tightly regulated pet birds on Earth, and rightly so. Tropical Wings Birds is a licensed CITES-registered breeder, and every Hyacinth we sell carries full CITES export documentation, a DNA-sex certificate, and veterinary clearance.

What owning a Hyacinth means

Hyacinths need space — a dedicated bird room is the minimum, an outdoor aviary is ideal. Their diet is unusual: they evolved to crack open the hardest palm nuts in the Brazilian Pantanal, and in captivity they need high-fat nuts (macadamia, Brazil, palm fruit) in quantities most other parrots would never require. They are generally gentle-natured despite their size, form strong pair-bonds, and live 50+ years in good care.

Acquiring a Hyacinth legally

Because of CITES Appendix I listing, a Hyacinth can only be legally imported into most jurisdictions with prior issue of a CITES import permit from your country’s wildlife authority. We cannot ship until you produce that permit. The process usually takes 4–12 weeks depending on jurisdiction. We’ll walk you through it when you contact us to reserve a bird.

Want to raise one from weaning?

See our Ara giacinto bambino sub-category — baby Hyacinths are generally easier to form initial bonds with and easier to ship than adults.

Related macaws and parrots

Hyacinth is one of many species in our Macaws collection. If CITES paperwork feels prohibitive, non-CITES-I macaws like the Blue & Gold Macaw, Ara scarlatta, or Ara severa are easier to import while delivering similar scale and personality. See the full Parrots collection for alternatives. For housing, only extra-large bird cages or aviary setups are suitable.
