The Black-Headed Waxbill is one of the smaller, more delicate African finches popular with mixed-species aviary keepers. Native to east and southern Africa, these birds are peaceful, social, and ā once acclimatised ā hardy in the right aviary setup.
Appearance and behaviour
Black-Headed Waxbills are about 10-11 cm long, with the distinctive black head and throat that give the species its name, contrasting with the softer brown-grey body plumage. Males and females are similar in appearance, with minor intensity differences in the head markings.
Unlike many finch species, waxbills don’t develop strong pair-bonds in the same way ā they’re happier in small groups of 4-6, where they’ll form loose social structures and share roosting perches. They’re not aggressive, so they’re ideal companions in a mixed-species aviary with other small peaceful finches.

- Access to bathing water ā waxbills bathe frequently
