The Falcated Duck (Anas falcata) is one of the most visually stunning of all dabbling ducks — a medium-sized Asian species with a breeding-season drake plumage that rivals any wood duck or mandarin. If you’re building a serious ornamental waterfowl collection, the Falcated is usually on the shortlist.
Appearance
Drakes in breeding plumage display an iridescent green and purple head with a distinctive crest of elongated dark green feathers that fall from the nape, a white throat, and the long falcated (sickle-shaped) tertial feathers that give the species its name. In eclipse plumage the drake resembles the female — subdued mottled brown. Hens are year-round mottled brown with a darker head.
Keeping Falcated Ducks
Falcated Ducks are hardy, peaceful, and well-suited to mixed-species collections. They need:
- Access to a pond of at least 3m² per pair, ideally with shallow margins for dabbling
- Grain-based diet supplemented with aquatic vegetation and duck pellets
- Secure pinioning or flight netting — they’re capable fliers
- Predator-proof overnight shelter, particularly during the breeding season
Pairs breed readily in captivity with simple ground nest cover. Hens lay 6-10 creamy-buff eggs with a 24-25 day incubation.
Our Falcated Ducks
All our birds are farm-raised from established breeding pairs, closed-leg-ringed, and ship through specialist live-poultry carriers. Import permits may be required depending on destination — contacteu-nos for country-specific guidance before ordering.
